McCain has no national service plan PDF Print E-mail

By BEN ADLER | 7/13/08 8:07 AM EST

John McCain, who’s predicated his presidential run in no small part on his distinguished military record, frequently exhorts Americans — and especially young Americans — to serve their country. Despite that appeal, he has yet to offer any proposals to expand or transform national service outside of the military.

Barack Obama, by contrast, has proposed dramatically expanding Americorps and the Peace Corps, adding 65,000 members to the military and creating an annual $4,000 tax credit for post-secondary education in exchange for 100 hours of community service.

RPCVSForObama.com on XM POTUS08 Radio PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 01 August 2008 17:36

The founder of RPCVSForObama.com, Tom Leonard, was interviewed today on XM POTUS08, Channel 130 on the satellite radio service.

POTUS08 is a political news channel on XM Satellite Radio, billing itself as Politically neutral, unbiased, commercial-free presidential campaign news 24/7.  Host Rebecca Roberts, who has a background reporting on the intersection of technology and society, asked about the goals of the site, the Peace Corps experience, and how the experience changes a volunteer's life.  Both Roberts and Producer Stephanie Green were genuinely interested in hearing about what we are up to and made a point of giving us the chance to promote the site and our objectives.

This is the kind of objective reporting that will help interested voters make the right choice in November.

Welcome to RPCV's For Obama PDF Print E-mail

I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Fiji. Group 40, back in 1980 - 1982. I taught at the Fiji Institute of Technology in Suva. It was one of the best experiences of my life.

I recently read Barack Obama’s book, Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance.  When I read about his family in Kenya, a huge extended family, it reminded me a lot about the Fijian families I came to know.  And it made me realize that someone with Barack Obama’s lifestory was someone I could relate to.

10,000 Volunteers - 100,000 Votes PDF Print E-mail

If there are over 190,000 Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, I will bet that at least 10,000 are interested - even passionate - about electing Barack Obama as the next President of the United States.  And if each RPCV got 10 voters each to go to the polls in November for Barack, that would add up to 100,000 votes!

Okay, does that even make a difference?  No one needs to be reminded about the events of the 2000 election where only a handful of votes in Florida put George Bush in the White House. Along with the help of the Supreme Court...

But even in the 2004 Presidential election, if 38,000 voters in three states - New Mexico, Iowa, and Nevada had not stayed home but voted for Kerry the electoral college vote would have been tied at 269 votes apiece.  And if 100,000 voters in Colorado or 120,000 voters in Ohio had voted for Kerry, he would be President today.

What Can I Do? PDF Print E-mail

Plenty.

RPCV's typically aren't the kind of people of just sit around whining and complaining.  We like to do things.  We like to do things that matter.

The Presidential Election of 2008 provides all of us with an incredible opportunity to help elect a President who really gets it; who understands what it is like to live in another culture, and knows from personal experience and family background that not everyone in the world lives and thinks like most Americans.

Here's what you can do to make a difference between now and November 4, 2008:
